Meet Terri Overby, Sales & Marketing Manager, Kings North Hills, Raleigh, NC
Terri Overby is someone who is a rare find in Raleigh, NC - a native to the area. Born and raised in Raleigh, Terri attended an arts-based high school where she was admittedly “bitten by the event bug” during her freshman year. Throughout high school, Terri participated in planning dances, galas, alumni events and musicals. When it was time to go to college, Terri continued to flex her event planning muscles at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro where she was involved in a multitude of events and productions including planning homecoming, the International Association semi-formals and weekly coffee hours, along with the UNCG Film Festival. Terri was also head of the Student Activity Board in student government, where she was responsible for booking bands and guest speakers for a variety of university events. A few highlights from her time on the Student Activity Board including dance with Barry Williams (Greg Brady) on stage, host an AIDS Walk with Maya Angelou – and have breakfast with Jon Bon Jovi. While still at UNCG, Terri branched out, working in the city of Greensboro on the Greater Greensboro Open, and on TV productions for the local CBS affiliate. Terri graduated from UNCG with a double major in Broadcast Journalism and Film Production.
After an extended career at a local TV news station where Terri was a Sales Marketing Coordinator, she found herself wanting to get back into a role where she could get back to her event planning roots. When a close friend, who also served as trivia host at Kings, told Terri about an opening in the event sales office, she jumped at the opportunity to explore Kings as an option. At the time, she was considering another position at the local PBS station; however, once she interviewed with Kings and realized the type of events and guests that Kings worked with, she was intrigued and decided to try her hand at selling fun.
“Terri brings an incredibly diverse background to her position as Sales & Marketing Manager here at Kings - having worked in both TV and Radio for most of her career, Terri has never met a stranger and is a natural at making you feel at home here at Kings. She’s been known to decorate bowling pins for guests and go out of her way to ensure that decorations and celebration cakes are delivered and presented to perfection”, says Jessica Rooks, Regional Sales & Marketing Manager. This attention to detail and natural hospitality makes anyone excited to hold an event at Kings. Whether you’re looking to plan a night out with family or a corporate outing for hundreds of guests, Terri’s drive for planning seamless events is second to none. Beyond that, being a Raleigh native and having worked in TV/Radio, along with her past experience as a local DJ, Terri is well rooted in the community. Terri’s ability to make genuine connections out in the community has been an integral part of the exciting sales growth that Kings Raleigh/North Hills has seen over the past couple of years.
When asked what has been the most challenging part of her journey at Kings, Terri replied, “Having to fight against the stigma of being ‘just a bowling alley’”. Working at Kings has given Terri the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the bar/restaurant side of things and she mentioned that she has learned so much about the work that goes into building dishes from Kings’ kitchen to the artful and hand-crafted cocktails that are on the menu. Getting to know the food and beverage side of things has become one more “weapon” in Terri’s fight against the bowling alley “stigma”. She is extremely passionate about everything Kings has to offer, from our scratch menu to the opportunity to create lasting memories whether you’ve come in for a date night or rewarding your team for hitting a monumental goal. Terri also mentioned that her favorite part of being in the hospitality industry is “being able to make a guest happy, even by doing something small to put a smile on their face.”
When Terri isn’t running out to find that last perfect touch for an upcoming event, she can be found at concerts or singing her heart out at karaoke. She’s also a huge “Caniac” (that’s a Carolina Hurricanes Hockey mega-fan, FYI) and also enjoys a variety of arts and crafts, cooking/baking and relaxing with her family and pup.
